Axel Alonso, Marvel's chief editor, said: “The superhero genre has been dominated by caucasian superheroes from Superman to Batman.
“When Spider-Man peels back that mask, there will be a whole new demographic of National Film Preservation Foundation kids who we’ll be reaching on a new spiritual level.”
“I have no doubt that people will fall in love with Miles the way they did with Peter Parker regardless of what race or class or creed they are.”
Artist Sara Pichelli, who came up with the new Spider-Man's look, said: "Maybe sooner or later a black or gay, or both, hero will be considered something absolutely normal."
