US to stay out of Durban follow-up

The Obama administration has given official confirmation that it will not take part in the follow-up to the Durban conference, set to take place at the United Nations headquarters in September.

In a letter to New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the acting US Assistant Secretary of State for legislative affairs, Joseph Macmanus, said the US did not want to take part in an event .
The UN World Conference Against Racism took place in Durban, South Africa, in 2001.

The event was criticised for descending into a forum to attack Israel, with Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat denouncing Israel in a speech and an attempt to reintroduce the "Zionism equals racism" UN resolution of 1975.
