Since I’ve been in law enforcement, I’ve always had a gun in my bedside table that I keep loaded, with no safety on, ready to go, one in the chamber, because that’s the only way I feel it’s effective. If I had kids it would be a different story. I would never, under any circumstances, have a loaded gun in the house if there were children there. When really bad things happen, they often happen at night when you’re sleeping. My husband doesn’t have any experience with shooting, defensive tactics, or law enforcement, so we have an understanding. Since I do have the training and experience – and the gun – my job and my role, if something bad were to happen, is to protect us and our home.

His role is to stay safe and to get on the phone to 911. My role would be to grab the gun and engage the suspect or suspects and defend us, and his role would be to get help for us and to stay safe.
