Russia’s alcohol and tobacco consumption by numbers

The Kremlin estimates that Russians consume 32 pints of pure alcohol per capita per year, more than double the World Health Organisation’s recommended maximum.

The head of Russia’s supreme court has said that of the 12,000 murders prosecuted in the country in 2010, 75 per cent of them were carried out under the influence of alcohol.

A report from the World Health Organisation released at the end of last year concluded that more adults smoked in Russia than in any other heavy-smoking country in the world.

It said that 44 million people or almost forty percent of the 142-million-strong population were smokers. More than sixty percent of Russian men and 22 percent of Russian women smoked, it found. Russian officials say up to 500,000 people a year in Russia die of smoking-related causes each year.
